Drums and Percussion

Philip Wakefield

Philip Wakefield began seriously studying the drums upon meeting Todd Straight (Eldar, Karrin Allyson) in Junior High School. Todd was impressed with Philip’s ability and took him on as a student even though he was younger than the students Todd taught at the time. After studying with Todd for three years, Philip went on to study with World Drum Corps Hall of Fame member, the late George Tuthill, until 2001.

He then went on to receive a Bachelor of Music from the Conservatory of Music at UMKC studying with jazz legend Bobby Watson. Philip was the recipient of the George Salisbury Scholarship from 2003-2007, and was awarded the drum chair in the two premier jazz ensembles at UMKC -- The Concert Jazz Orchestra, and The 2 O’clock Combo.

Philip started playing professionally in Kansas City at the age of 16, subbing for KC jazz great Tommy Ruskin, as well as gigging with the likes of Everette DeVan and Mark Lowry. Philip is currently an active performer in the Kansas City area playing with such people as Bobby Watson, and Bram Wijnands. He also leads a trio/quartet under his own name.
